An Author’s Journey – Guest Post By Kacey Hammell

Thanks for having me today, Elizabeth, on day 6 of the Guarding Midnight Tour.

GuardingMidnightI’ve written stories for years. I’ve had up to a dozen titles under my belt and have always learned from each story told.

But while writing Guarding Midnight something different started happening. I felt different – more certain in my words, more driven to get this story into readers’ hands – and my belief in myself changed.

As an author, many of us can get into our own kind of funk. Writing story after story where there is a fantastic story being told and charismatic characters that come alive on paper, but there are times when we just write so many stories we can lose the drive and passion for it.

Of course, speaking from my own personal experiences, writing Guarding Midnight I evolved as a writer. My conversations with the characters were different, more complex, the story itself took on a much larger role of its own from the outline I’d done (which I rarely do and am normally a pantser) but the story veered off in path’s I hadn’t expected. And it all made me slow down, take the time to figure out what each character was trying to tell me. How the story came out was so much volatile and passionate than I’d ever thought it could be.

I also fell in total love with my hero. Gavin is someone like I’d never written before. Sure I’d had heroes who had overcome so much and loved fiercely, but Gavin is my first deeply tortured hero, scarred and bruise from his time in Afghanistan, and he embraces me now—everyday I think about him and feel his arms wrap around me. He stands out to me as one of my greatest heroes, even those forthcoming that I can see, Gavin’s need for peace and his compassion for others tears me in two and makes me love him all the more.

I’ve always told my children that no matter your age, ‘you’re never too old to learn’, and I learned a lot about myself, writing, and compassion while working on Guarding Midnight. I grew as a writer and a person every moment I spent on it.

Canadian Muscle …

When Desires Need Protecting.

No one knows sacrifice better than former Army Sergeant Gavin Bennett. He’s witnessed firsthand the emotional, physical and mental toll of being caught in the crossfire. Being a bouncer-slash-bodyguard may not be Gavin’s dream job, but he’s willing to do just about anything to help out family. When Gavin reports for his first day of work, he quickly discovers a woman who threatens to crack his legendary cool.

Shree Walker is on the run from a dark past she tried to shut away. Battered and broken, a happily ever after doesn’t exist for her. Ready to start fresh with a new life in a new city, she is happy dancing at the Vixen Club. She’d be even happier without the presence of the prickly new bouncer who won’t let anyone or anything get past his carefully guarded defenses. He’s a distraction she doesn’t need. And a temptation she can’t resist.

When Shree is kidnapped by the criminal mastermind hell-bent on taking the club at any cost, Gavin has to make a decision. Hold tight and continue to keep Shree at arm’s length. Or break down his walls and take a chance on something more powerful than them both: Love.
